David Nweze Umahi was appointed Minister of Works on August 16, 2023 and sworn in
on August 21, 2023.
He was born on January 1, 1964 and received his secondary education at Ishiagu High School and
the Government Secondary School Afikpo, Ebonyi State.
He attended the Enugu State University of Science and Technology from 1982 and graduated in 1987
with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering.
Engr. Umahi started his professional career shortly after completing his one-year National Youth
Service Corps (NYSC). He was employed by SCC Nig Ltd, an Israeli company and a water engineering giant, as an engineer and eventually advanced to the project engineer.
The historic Umuahia Water Project and the Ndiegoro Aba Flood Control measures between 1988 and 1990 are some of the projects overseen by him.

He co-founded Norman Engineering and Construction Nigeria Limited with the then Managing Director of the National Fertilizer Company of Nigeria, NAFCON, Port-Harcourt, Dr Ombo lsokarari. And by 1993, he had become the firm’s general manager and shareholder. Before his resignation in March 2011 to pursue his political ambition as the deputy governor of Ebonyi State, he had served as chairman and CEO of Brass Engineering & Construction Nig Ltd, Focus
Investment Nig Ltd, and Osborn La Palm Royal Resort Ltd. Before then, Umahi was the acting chairman of the Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2007. He also served as substantive state
chairman of the party from 2009 to 2011. He was on the governing board of the Federal Medical Centre in Asaba as its chairman.
In 2011, Umahi became deputy governor of Ebonyi State. He was elected governor of the state in 2015 and re-elected for second term in 2019.
On November 17, 2020, he joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), under which he attempted to contest for the nation’s number one position, the President, in 2023. He however stepped down for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
He later emerged the senatorial candidate of the APC for the Ebonyi South; contested and won the election into the 10th Senate.
He had to resign from the Senate to take up the appointment as Works minister.
